A Mother's Song

Greetings from Susanna

Birth is rarely a simple, clean process, no matter the infant nor the parents involved. Incubation rates vary from species to species, as do the methods of delivery. The Mother's Torch was a glimmer in her parents' eyes for quite some time; she grew symbiotically as M.E.L.T.'s world-wide audience expanded. Just last March, The US Wing of the Mother's Torch began to emerge from her shell. She perched on the side of the nest, waiting for the warm uplifts of ideas and energy to meld. A web page was developed, volunteers came forward eagerly to carry her heavenward. In the latter part of spring, when the sun was warming the nest quite early in the day, The Mother's Torch winged her way into the world.

She immediately traveled into the virtual land of the World Wide Web and discovered the Tree of Life, where she made her own nest in the maze of branches. When the sun rose, she sang her parents' songs of caring for the earth. In the evening hours, as the cool moonlight replaced the heat of the day, she continued singing of a time when her world would be pristine again. Many harkened to hear the melody. Six months later, 32 individuals have gladly added their name to the list of concerned, motivated, caring citizens of their country and planet. A few days later, a sister, The British Wing, added her own rhythm to the song in the Tree. Someday, more sisters may join the branch and their harmony will fill the skies!

The call of the Mother's Torch is Awareness, the most important song any of us can sing. The beauty of the tune is its simplicity. Mankind has changed our world, some believe for the better, many for the worse. We do possess the ability to change it, to return this mother earth to the pristine nature she once enjoyed. Awareness is the bridge in our song, joining the verses of personal commitment to change, and the chorus which invites all our neighbors to start the process individually, allowing it to echo into the world.

The Mother's Torch soon learned that the Tree of Life where she sings is replete with individuals, but that the individuals form The Choir of Humanity. The Choir's pews take up countless rows of branches. From time to time, remarkable solos rise above the swell, creating awareness of unique situations in life. Many in the Tree heard the song of Samira and her mother Alexandra, including the Mother's Torch. We are attempting to rewrite the lyrics of solitude and distress we heard, hoping to replace them with our own stanzas of compassion and concern. In the future, we hope the Mother's Torch US Wing will assist other members of our world as their particular songs reach our ears.

"Our Green Age," the US Wing's newsletter, is just another refrain in our song of Awareness. Please enjoy the articles, columns and letters written by our members. The Mother's Torch parents', the members of the European band M.E.L.T. - Mother Earth Love Truth - managed a short interview for us. We hope their busy schedule will allow for more conversation in upcoming editions. The name of this newsletter is derived from a line which appears in "THE FORCE THAT THROUGH THE GREEN FUSE DRIVES THE FLOWER " a poem written by Dylan Thomas, one of M.E.L.T.'s favorite poets.

For those of you interested in joining the US Wing of the Mother's Torch, membership in our choir is simple: we ask that you merely be a concerned citizen. We collect no dues or fees; any funds requested do not benefit the organization, but the target of the donation itself. We simply ask for your energy, and for your added awareness of our world and her needs.

Keep the Torch burning!
